About Shalom Midwifery

We Believe:

Birth is inherently safe, peaceful, and intuitive.

Our Philosophy:

Are you Jewish?

Although I cherish my relationship with my Savior, I am not Jewish. However, I resonate with many of the same theological principles. So, why the name "Shalom" for my midwifery practice? Let me explain.

For the first 15 years of my practice, I operated under the name Beautiful Blessings Midwifery. While I still hold a deep affection for that name, which became beloved in our community, there was a time when I considered establishing two separate practices: one for home births and another for a birth center. I found myself reflecting on whether managing two distinct business names would be worth the hassle, so I spent many months in prayer over this decision.

Eventually, I nearly resigned myself to keeping Beautiful Blessings Midwifery. I loved the name and felt no sadness in maintaining it. Then, one fateful Sunday, while sitting in church, my pastor spoke passionately about the profound meaning of the word "Shalom." He elaborated on what Shalom encompasses: Safety, Health, Wholeness, Prosperity, Victory, Blessing, Protection, Rest, Completeness, Salvation, Quietness, and Being Well-Watered.

I immediately heard God say, "Hmmm, weird, that sounds like what midwifery embodies, doesn't it?" (yes, thats the way God talks to me. LOL The way a friend would talk to me, or I to a friend or even the way I talk to God regularly.) I tend to embrace a more lighthearted, sarcastic, and witty approach to life, and I believe God knows how to communicate in a way that resonates with me. His sense of humor is something I truly appreciate.

In that instant, I realized God was answering my prayer. He understood my desire for a name that was strong, warm, welcoming, and felt like home. “Shalom” perfectly reflects my commitment to providing a holistic and harmonious experience for families, fostering love, peace, and deep connection throughout the birthing process. And just like that, Shalom Midwifery was born!

At Shalom Midwifery, we wholeheartedly believe that every birth is a unique and beautiful journey, one that deserves to be embraced with warmth and care. Our approach is designed to be as dynamic and personal as the mothers and families we are honored to serve. We recognize that flexibility is key; we are here to meet you where you are and offer the support you need in each moment. Whether you want us to be actively involved or prefer us to gently observe from a distance, we adapt to your preferences. Birth can be unpredictable, and it can often be a dance between preparation and surrender, a journey where you trust your body and intuition.

We believe that two essential ingredients contribute to a positive home birth experience. First, your frame of mind is crucial. How do you view the process of birth? Are there reservations holding you back, or do you feel empowered to embrace this experience? It’s normal to have a mix of feelings—fear, doubt, excitement—but nurturing a belief that you are created for this moment can make all the difference. This is your opportunity, a chance to welcome your baby into the world on your own terms.

Second, your support system, which includes your midwives, doctor, doula, family members, friends, neighbors, etc. essentially anyone that has influence over your thoughts or beliefs of home birth, can make or break your experience. Surround yourself with those who truly understand and support your desires, needs, and choices. If someone in your circle doesn’t resonate with your vision for birth, it's best for them to lend their support in other ways after the birth and when you are ready to bring them into your baby moon bubble. For example, let them help with meals, older children, or chores during your postpartum period so you can focus on this transformative time.

We encourage moms and dads to catch their own babies, because we believe that the first touch belongs to you and its such a life changing special event. This is your baby, and you should be the first ones to welcome them into your arms. When it comes to your journey, we prioritize transparency and informed consent, providing you with all the information you need—both the beautiful and the challenging—so that you can make the best choices for your family without feeling pressured.

A core principle of our philosophy is bodily autonomy; we celebrate your right to make informed choices about your body and your baby. We encourage you to educate yourself and take ownership of your decisions, understanding the impact they have. Your health and your baby's well-being are of utmost importance, and we stand by you lovingly supporting you, while offering suggestions, guidance, and expertise when needed.Think of our approach as a partnership in free birthing—an empowering experience where you hold the reins while I stand by like a lifeguard, ready to offer support when necessary. My role is to create a safe, protected space, providing reassurance without stepping in unnecessarily. I trust God, birth, and your strength and intuition, giving you the freedom to find your own strength as you navigate this incredible experience.

Once your beautiful baby arrives and everyone is healthy, we will respectfully step out of the room to allow you some cherished bonding time as new parents. During this special moment, as you soak in the joy of the incredible little one you’ve brought into the world, we’ll be busy preparing a delicious meal to satisfy your appetite, tidying up your space, and starting the laundry to restore your home to its familiar warmth. A couple of hours later, before I tuck you in for a restful night and head back to my own family, I will check in to ensure that your baby has nursed, offer support if you’d like to take a shower, perform a gentle newborn examination, and provide you with helpful postpartum information. As I give you a heartfelt hug and express how proud we are of you, I’ll quietly lock the door behind me, leaving you to savor the intimate moments of parenthood.
